Joy and Peace Wreath

The theme for Creative Knockouts Challenge #431 is "Time to Be Merry." I needed a few somewhat-quick Christmas cards to finish up my supply for this year, and found this one on Pinterest for inspiration. I liked how the wreath was incomplete & the greeting nestled into the open area. I pulled out my Large Wreath Builder template from Gina K. Designs & my MISTI stamp positioning tool to create the wreath on my card.

I cut my white cardstock panel to 4-3/4" square. Before I started stamping the wreath, I went ahead & heat embossed the greeting (from Hero Arts 2020 My Monthly Hero kit) with Ranger's Gold Super Fine Detail embossing powder. I then placed my panel in the wreath template, which I had taped into the corner of my MISTI. I also taped the 2 smaller guide pieces in place in the template, so they wouldn't shift as I stamped.

I used a combination of images from Lawn Fawn's "Deck the Halls" & Gina K. Designs' "Holiday Wreath Builder" sets to stamp my wreath. I began with the poinsettia flowers, figuring they were the largest element & so a good place to start. I stamped the one in the lower right, below the greeting, first, then worked my way around until what would have been the next-to-last turn in the template. That took me to just above the greeting on the upper right, so I stopped before making the last turn in the template. I continued stamping images in the same way, until I'd filled out the wreath. Finally, I went in with a few extra little stamps, just above & below the greeting, to bring the ends of the wreath closer to the text.

I cut a panel of red cardstock to 4-7/8" square, to give me a 1/16" mat all around my stamped panel. I cut  a 5" square of kraft cardstock to mat that, and adhered it to a white 5" square card base.

I'm also entering this card in 613 Avenue Create's December challenge: "Anything Goes w/Optional Twist - Any Holiday" (playing the twist).

Warm Winter Wishes

The October Monthly Mix Challenge at Gina K. Designs' blog has a theme of "Ink Smooshing." I decided to do a bit of a twist on this, by using Distress Oxide inks on glossy photo paper & then going over it with a baby wipe.

I got an A2-size panel I'd previously cut from a sheet of photo paper I'd gotten at Dollar Tree. Unless it's changed, this paper comes in a pack of 8 letter-size sheets for just $1.00. So, if you make A2 cards & use the photo paper for the full card front, that's about 32 card panels for a buck - not a bad deal from where I stand! For this technique, I've heard the cheaper the paper the better, so....

I used Kitsch Flamingo & Cracked Pistachio Distress Oxide inks for my ink smooshing. I was kind of expecting a purple from the Cracked Pistachio (since it leans towards blue) mixing with the pink. But the Cracked Pistachio ink surprised me by turning into a yellow green! Thankfully, it didn't harm the look at all.

After I finished the ink smooshing technique, I stamped the large swooping image from Gina K's "Holiday Tapestry" set with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide ink. I used my MISTI stamp positioning tool for that, since I had to stamp it a few times to get a good impression.

Then the magic happened. I wiped the panel with a damp baby wipe, which brings the colors from a chalky finish to where they just sing! It also "pulls" the colors in the background layers up. Not so they overshadow the upper layers, though; just so they add flavor.

I chose a greeting from Gina K's "Holiday Wreath Builder" and stamped it with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide ink onto a scrap of aqua cardstock. I cut that into a banner shape, & hand-stitched it to the top of my panel. Finally, I adhered my card front panel to a white card base.

Two Slimline Holiday Cards

The current Slimline Challenge at My Favorite Things is a Christmas theme. I created 2 cards to enter.

I used the new-to-me Hero Arts "Color Layering Snowflake" stamp set for my stamping. I stamped the first layer in Lawn Fawn Kiddie Pool ink, followed by Hero Arts Tide Pool, & ending with My Favorite Things Blu Raspberry. The snowflakes are kind of finicky to line up, but I finally managed.

After I'd finished stamping, I die cut Winnie & Walter's "Joy" (discontinued) from the center of my panel. I also die cut it a few more times from a light purple cardstock. I adhered my panel to my card base, and then inlaid one of the purple die cuts in the negative space. I went ahead at that point & inlaid the stamped center of the "o" as well, just because it's easier to do it then than having to shove it through multiple layers of die cuts. I stacked the rest of my purple die cuts on top of the first, using liquid glue to adhere them. Finally, I glued on the stamped joy die cut. I never tire of this two-tier eclipse technique. It just looks so cool!

My second card is portrait-oriented. I used components from the "Snow Globe Gala" digital stamp set from Doodle Pantry (discontinued) with Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps' "Winter Friends" digital stamp. I created a blank slimline-size "canvas" in Photoshop, and copied my image components onto that canvas. I positioned everything, as well as a greeting from "Snow Globe Gala," and then printed the composite image onto a panel of Cheap Joe's 140 lb. Kilimanjaro watercolor paper. I used my watercolors to paint the image. I colored the round decorative pieces with a silver paint pen. Finally, I adhered a teal layer to a white card base, & added my main panel.

I'm also entering my second card in Christmas Card Throwdown's "Snow Globe" theme challenge.

Have a Stellar Birthday!

The current Lawn Fawnatics challenge theme is "Spectacular Skies." I thought, how much more spectacular is a star-filled galaxy sky? I combined 2 Lawn Fawn stamp sets - "Super Star" & "Bubbles of Joy" - with a few Lawn Fawn die sets to create my card.

For the sky/background, I first die cut a panel from Strathmore Mixed Media paper with the largest of the "Large Stitched Rectangle" dies. Rather than using watercolor or ink blending to create my galaxy background, I decided to try ink smooshing combined with sprays. First, I applied Fossilized Amber, Picked Raspberry, & Chipped Sapphire Distress inks onto my non-stick craft mat. I spritzed them with water, & plopped my panel face-down in the ink. I quickly learned that the Fossilized Amber doesn't seem to play well with Chipped Sapphire, at least if you want a bright green, & ended up with a slightly muddy green instead. Fortunately, that was only my first layer! I dried that with my heat gun, & smooshed my panel back into the watery ink. I daubed up the muddy color spots with a dry cloth, dried it again with my heat gun, & then moved on to sprays. I spritzed first with London Blue & After Midnight Dylusions sprays. I did just a couple of light sprays at first, since I didn't want to cover my ink smooshing completely. I dried that with my heat gun, and spritzed on some Black Marble Dylusions spray. After I dried that, I added more of the London Blue & After Midnight, then a little more Black Marble. I dried all that, and splattered on the White Gold & Blue Gold Gansai Tambi Starry Colors watercolors for good measure. The watercolors did pick up the blue from the spray ink, but I still think the effect was worth it. I LOVE how this background came out!!! I will definitely have to do this more in the future! 😊

I die cut another piece of mixed media paper with the same stitched rectangle die, & die cut the upper border with a "Stitched Hillside Borders" die. I used Fresh Lime & Cut Grass Dylusions sprays to add color to my grassy hill. This gave it the same speckled look as the sky, creating cohesion.

I let my panels dry overnight, so I could be sure they were completely dry, since I wanted to heat emboss on both pieces. I used a few of the star/constellation stamps in "Super Star" & Ranger White Super Fine Detail embossing powder to "decorate" my sky. I also used a greeting from "Super Star," & heat embossed that in white on the grass layer. I didn't trust myself to emboss the exclamation point in the stamp set well, since it is so tiny. So I added one with a white gel pen. The gel ink, however, picked up the green from the sprays, so I decided to go over it again with the pen, then immediately apply white embossing powder & see if that would heat emboss. And it did - perfectly!

I stamped my images onto Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I colored them with my Prismacolor pencils, and cut them out with the coordinating dies. I also die cut a balloon & string from "Party Balloons" for the mouse from "Bubbles of Joy" to "ride" on. I added a bit of shading to the balloon with a colored pencil, though I'm not sure it made much of a difference in the end.

Because I used liquid glue to add my images, I first added a coat of Distress Micro Glaze to my sky & grass, hoping to keep the glue from reactivating the ink. Unfortunately, it didn't work, but I was very careful, & managed to keep the Dylusions & Distress inks from smearing all over the place. I glued the balloon & string first, then added my mice & telescope. I glued the speech bubble near the flying mouse, & stamped the "Make a wish" from "Super Star" in Versafine Onyx Black ink. Then I adhered my finished card front to a white A2-size card base.

The Best Birthday Ever

I am in need of several cards for fast-upcoming birthdays. I actually made two of this version, with different color schemes. The current challenge at Double Trouble inspired the autumnal color palette.

I pulled out my Gina K. Designs 4" Wreath Builder template. Since I just wanted to make a swag at the top & bottom, though, I used a piece of white cardstock cut to 4x5-1/4", rather than a 4" square like you would normally use with this template. I also used images from Gina's "Autumn Wreath Builder" stamp set.

I used all Memento dye inks for my stamping. I began by stamping the maple leaves in Cantaloupe. After I stamped the first leaf in the middle on one end of my panel, I turned my cardstock to the adjacent diagonal orientation in the template, & stamped the second. I turned the panel to the other adjacent diagonal orientation, & stamped a third leaf. Then, I turned the panel 180° & stamped 3 more leaves in the same way. I stamped the longer sprigs with Bamboo Leaves ink, positioning them between the maple leaves. For the flowers & other 2 sprigs, since I only stamped 2 on each end, I had to stamp the image, rotate my cardstock 180°, & stamp again. Then I repositioned the stamp on the opposite side of the panel, & repeated the process. The smaller sprigs I actually stamped first with Bamboo Leaves, then stamped on top with Teal Zeal.

After I finished stamping my images, I removed the Wreath Builder template from my MISTI stamp positioning tool, & put my panel back in with a grid sheet over it to help me line up the circle (from the original "Wreath Builder" stamp set) for my greeting. When I finally lined that up, I stamped it with Tangelo ink. I double-stamped the greeting, also from the original set, with Teal Zeal ink. To finish the card, I matted it with peach cardstock & adhered it to a white A2-size card base.

Merry Christmas

The October Color Challenge at Christmas Card Throwdown is to use red & brown on your card. One of my favorite stamp sets is Hero Arts' "Color Layering Cardinal." I decided to pair that with the "Woodgrain" embossing folder from Tim Holtz for a woodland-style card.

To stamp the cardinal, I used all Memento dye inks. I began with Tangelo for the first, most solid, layer, & then stamped over it with Lady Bug, to give me an orangey-red color. I used Rhubarb Stalk for the second layer, followed by London Fog for the third. I stamped the face details with Tuxedo Black. I also stamped the feet with Tangelo + London Fog, and used Lawn Fawn's Walnut ink for the branch.

I cut out the pieces with the coordinating dies, & glued the feet to the bird's body. I decided to frame the focal image with a circle. So I die cut a mid-tone brown cardstock circle, & a second lighter-colored circle to mat it. I glued the bird & branch to the front circle, trimmed off the overhanging parts of the branch, then glued the whole thing to the mat.

I embossed a panel of brown cardstock with the "Woodgrain" folder. I stamped the greeting, from Hero Arts "Color Layering Snowflake," in Walnut ink onto a scrap of the same cardstock I'd used for the circular mat, then cut that into a strip. I inked the edges of the greeting strip with Gathered Twigs Distress ink, to help it stand out & not look so bland. I also added foam tape to the back to give it just a bit of dimension.

To accent the greeting & bring a bit of red down towards that part of the card, I used Lady Bug & Rhubarb Stalk to stamp 3 berry branches from "Color Layering Cardinal." After I die cut them, I adhered the bottoms to the foam tape on the back of the greeting. I added the assemblage to my embossed panel, using liquid glue behind the branches. Finally, I added my panel to a red mat that I'd adhered to a white A2-size card base.

Merry Christmas

I have a plastic shoebox with various bits & bobs that I've made in the past. Stamped/die cut images or shapes, backgrounds, greetings, etc. Mostly things I've had left over from other projects or that I changed my mind about using & saved for a future project. This card came from elements in that box. The background panel was actually 1 of 4 that I had made. I had used a letter-size sheet of Strathmore Mixed Media paper, & ink smooshed with various Distress inks. Finally, I splattered with gold watercolor, then cut it into 4 A2-size panels. I've been keeping it for the "perfect" occasion. I decided Christmas Card Throwdown's September Sketch Challenge was that occasion, as the sketch has a lot of open background area.

September sketch

I pulled the Divinity Designs "Chickadee Single" image, that I'd previously stamped & die cut, from the same leftovers box. Because the background is so colorful & rather busy, I decided to leave the image uncolored. I cut 2 strips of patterned papers from my scrap stash to ground the image. Because the bird is looking to the right, I flipped the sketch horizontally. I adhered the paper strips & bird to the background. I used the "Merry Christmas" stamp from Hero Arts' "Vintage Christmas Post" (a favorite of mine, sadly discontinued) for the greeting. I stamped it in Lawn Fawn Blue Jay ink onto a light purple strip. I cut the right end at an angle, & glued it to my card so the left end tucks neatly under the bird & branch. Finally, I adhered my card front to a white card base.

Happy Halloween

I created this card for Creative Knockouts' Challenge #417: "For the Kids." I will send it to Send a Smile 4 Kids, to brighten a hospitalized child's day a bit.

My design is based on Sketch #SC590 at Splitcoaststampers.com. I first die cut a 3-3/4" diameter circle, & stamped my image, from Penny Black's "Bewitched" set, on that. I masked off the mice, broomstick, & top of the broom, and inked the circle with Scattered Straw Distress ink, to make it look like a glowing moon. I removed the mask, & colored the images with my Prismacolor colored pencils. Since they are flying in front of the moon, I tried to color the mice & their accoutrements lighter around the edges, as if they are backlit.

I adhered a panel of patterned paper, from The Paper Studio's "Trick or Treat" letter-size pad, to a white A2-size card base. After I determined how low the moon would go, I adhered my purple greeting strip. I adhered the moon; then stamped the greeting, from My Favorite Things' "Batty for You" set (discontinued). And that finished this simple card!

Birthday Blessings

I needed a special birthday card for a special friend. I decided to make a fancy-fold card of sorts, & found a tutorial on Lattice Fold Cards by Sam Calcott. I used her "bonus" technique of putting the pop-up lattice feature on the inside of the card. For a pattern, I used the "Susan's Lattice Folds" template from Hot Off the Press (discontinued).

Sam had suggested in her tutorial that using a white-core cardstock would give a cool two-tone effect to the lattice portion. I have a pad of 12x12" cardstock from Die Cuts with a View called Flip/Side. It has 2 different shades of a color per sheet. I chose a mint/teal cardstock from that pad.

Inside of card showing lattice fold

I began with the inside panel. I cut it to 7x12", and scored it in half at 6". I knew I would cut it down eventually, but wanted to make sure it was wide enough, so started with a larger piece. I lined up my template pattern along the fold, & traced the cut lines with a pencil. I cut them with scissors, & then folded down every other section. I cut off the folded piece at the very bottom & glued it to the top to complete the pattern. I did end up trimming down the panel at the top & bottom, as well as the sides. Then I set that aside to work on the rest of the card.

For the front, I die cut a tag from a faux-dip-dye watercolor panel that I'd made previously. I die cut a butterfly with Divinity Designs' "Fancy Fritillary" from silver mirror cardstock backed with Stick It adhesive. I cut the tag reinforcer from the same silver cardstock & glued it in place. I adhered the butterfly to the tag at an angle, & adhered the tag to a panel I'd cut from the leftover piece of the inside panel. I used the teal side of the remaining cardstock piece to mat my panel, & then mounted it onto a white card base.

For the greeting, I heat embossed the "birthday blessings" from Altenew's "Balloon Bunch" stamp set onto a scrap of a different teal cardstock. I cut it into a banner, & adhered it to the front of my card. I adhered the inside panel in place, & adhered 2 white panels on either side for a personal message.

Kitty Thanks

Recently, one of our cats, Barney, passed away after a long battle with renal failure. I wanted to create a thank you card to send to the doctor & staff at the vet's office where he was treated. I came across the "Cat with Butterfly" stamp from Rubber Cottage (discontinued) in my stash, which I have had for some years now. Since butterflies symbolize (among other things in different cultures) hope & bravery, I just thought this image was perfect. I paired it with one of the "Many Thanks" dies from My Favorite Things (discontinued). For the design, I adapted an old Operation Write Home sketch.

Because the cat on the stamp is a tabby, & Barney was a grey & white cat, I couldn't see stamping the image in a dark ink. So I pulled out my Fade-Out no-line coloring ink by Ink on 3. The stamp was a wood-mount red rubber stamp, which I had converted to cling mount, so you can't see through it. I didn't trust that I could use my MISTI & position the stamp correctly on the panel, so I used my Stamp-a-Ma-Jig instead. Usually with Fade-Out ink, I like to double-stamp the image to be able to see the lines better. But, due to the size of this stamp, I wasn't confident that I could re-stamp the image, even holding the Stamp-a-Ma-Jig handle in place when I lifted my block. Thankfully, I got a good enough impression on the first try!

Using my Prismacolor pencils, I colored the butterfly yellow (because, why not?), and colored the kitty to look like Barney. The white parts of his body were the most difficult, since I needed to add shading so they stood out against the background, but still make them look white. So I colored those parts just barely with a very light cool grey pencil. There is grass in the stamp, but I added more with a couple of green pencils, just to fill it out. I toyed with the idea of coloring the sky area, but thought it wouldn't look good in the end, so I just left it alone.

Since Barney has gone on to the Rainbow Bridge, where all pets go to await their (human) parents when they die, I decided to make the greeting in rainbow colors. I adhered strips of colored cardstocks to a scrap piece of white cardstock, then cut it with the thanks die. I glued that to a light grey panel, to echo the grey colors in the kitty. I added a black strip to separate the greeting & image panels, & used a teal blue cardstock to mat the panels.

Poinsettia Joy

I created this card inspired by this week's color challenge at Christmas Card Throwdown. The colors this time are aqua, rose pink, & metallic gold. An unusual color scheme for sure, but I had fun pulling this together.

I first die cut my poinsettias from 2 shades of pink cardstock with the Poppystamps "Blooming Poinsettia" dies. I used only the 2 smaller flower dies for those pieces, and die cut the centers from gold metallic cardstock. I glued the lighter flower layers on top of the darker ones, adding glue just in the centers. Finally, I glued on the centers, again adding just a dot of glue in the middle of the die cut.

For the greeting, I die cut Lawn Fawn's "Scripty Joy" from the same pink cardstocks as my flowers. I glued the lighter die cut over the darker, offset to give a shadow effect.

I cut my tag from gold metallic cardstock with a Scrapbook.com "Nested Tags" die. After I figured out where to place my greeting & flowers, I glued them to the tag. I also added the tittle to the "j" at this point. I originally die cut the hole reinforcer from the light aqua cardstock I used for my background, but it blended in too much when I adhered the tag in place. So I die cut it again from the darker pink, & just glued that over the aqua one. To finish, I just adhered my card front to a white A2-size card base. This was actually a really simple card to make. The hardest part was just figuring out what products I wanted to use!

Happy Birthday Kitty

A friend of mine has a birthday coming up. She is a cat person, so I decided to use the image from the "Newton's Birdhouse" stamp set from Newton's Nook for the image on my card. I brought in the greeting from My Favorite Things' "Birthday Greetings" stamp set (discontinued).

I followed a tutorial for a "Free Standing Pop-Up Card" at Splitcoaststampers.com. I have not made one of these in a long time, & figured it would be perfect for this little image.

After I cut a tag panel from Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper, I stamped the image in Ink on 3's Fade-Out ink so I could do some no-line coloring. I then used my Prismacolor colored pencils to color it. I used a green pencil to add grass to give Newton a surface to lie on. For the greeting, I used Versafine Clair Morning Mist ink, to coordinate with the grey kitty.

I rounded the top two corners of my tag with my 1/4" We R Memory Keepers Corner Chomper. I cut a mat layer from red cardstock, to bring out the red in the birdhouse, & rounded the top corners of that. After I added the panel to my mat, I folded 2 die cut circles over the top. I punched a hole & set a large eyelet with my We R Memory Keepers Crop-a-Dile II Big Bite tool. Finally, I threaded a piece of ribbon through the eyelet & tied a bow around it with grey & white baker's twine.

I created my base from a piece of Bazzill Robin's Egg cardstock. I used a patterned paper from Echo Park's "Sweet Summertime" 6x6" pad to decorate the outside. Finally, I inserted & adhered my tag element into the base, following the tutorial instructions. I really love how this card came out, & especially how easy it was to put together, thanks to the excellent tutorial!

As a bonus, here's a photo of myself with our 2 new kittens, Charlie & Robinson, that I'm entering in Cleo's Special Random Draw at Double Trouble Paper Crafting's Challenge #90:

One Sketch, Two Cards

I created not one, but 2 cards for Lawn Fawnatics' Challenge #106. They posted a sketch, & challenged participants to create a project based on that. For my first card, I rotated the sketch 90 degrees. I stamped the Be Merry greeting from Lawn Fawn's "Peace Joy Love" stamp set (discontinued) 5 times at a diagonal, shifting the card panel up in my MISTI stamp positioning tool each time I stamped.

I stamped the joy (from the same set) several times with Lawn Fawn's Kiddie Pool ink, onto a scrap of white cardstock. I die cut it with a "Small Cross-Stitched Rectangle" die from Lawn Fawn. After I  trimmed my blue panel slightly, to 5-1/4x4", I adhered my main greeting panel in the middle. I adhered the blue panel to a white A2-size card base. I added several Pretty Pink Posh 4mm & 6mm Sparkling Clear Sequins, & that finished this first card.

My second card is for the mother of a friend of ours. Her husband passed away earlier this year, & we heard she is not doing well now. So I decided to make a card to send to her, to try & lift her spirits a little. This time, I kept pretty much with the sketch.

I die cut an oval from Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper with one of Lawn Fawn's "Large Stitched Oval" dies. I stamped the image from "Rain or Shine Before 'n Afters" towards the top of the oval with a light grey ink. I also stamped one of the greetings from the set below the image, in a slightly darker grey. I used an orangey-yellow ink to stamp the sun portion onto a scrap of yellow cardstock, & fussy cut just the sun out. After I colored the rainbow & clouds with my Prismacolor colored pencils, I glued the sun in place.

I felt the empty bottom area threw off the design, so I die cut another portion of an oval from a scrap of pale blue cardstock, & used a Lawn Fawn "Puffy Cloud Borders" die to cut the top portion. Then I glued that to the bottom of my main oval. I also inked the perimeter outside the stitching line with Speckled Egg Distress ink, to help the oval stand out from the background.

I cut a piece of patterned paper I'd gotten as a gift in a Lawn Fawn order to 3x4-1/2", & glued my oval centered on that. I covered the front of my 4-bar card base with a yellow cardstock, & added strips of different colors to that, to mimic the rainbow in the image. I backed the patterned paper panel with another piece of white cardstock that I'd cut the same size, so the cardstock strips behind it wouldn't create any dents in the paper layer. Finally, I adhered the patterned paper pane to the card.

Happy Holiday Wishes

I am honored & excited to be guest designing for Christmas Card Throwdown sketch challenge this week! You can find all the details & enter your card at their site.

Christmas Card Throwdown Sketch

For the images on my card I used WPlus9's "Poinsettia Builder" stamp set. This layering set is very easy to use. I stamped the first layer of each flower with Lawn Fawn Guava ink, then followed with Memento Love Letter, Altenew Ruby Red, & finished with a double-stamping of Ranger Red Geranium Archival ink. I used Delicata Golden Glitz for the flower centers, & Delta Emerald Green and Memento Cottage Ivy for the leaves on the 2 larger flowers. The smallest flower doesn't have a leaf layer to go with it, & looked rather naked without any. So I just used a couple of Tombow markers to indicate leaves on that one. I stamped my greeting, from Simon Says Stamp's "Holiday Greetings Mix 1" set, onto a scrap of white cardstock & cut it into a banner.

I wanted to try something different for my background. I used an A2-size panel of navy cardstock & Prima's "Flourish" stencil (discontinued). I temporarily adhered the stencil to my panel, and used a makeup wedge to apply metal leafing glue through the openings. After I removed the stencil, I let the glue dry until it was tacky, then added Nuvo Radiant Gold gilding flakes to the adhesive. After I covered the panel with the flakes, I used a stiff bristle paintbrush to scrub away the excess. Finally, I lightly buffed the surface with a sanding block to remove any "straggler" flakes.

I die cut each flower with a circle die, and cut mat layers for them from Bazzill Icy Mint cardstock. After I glued the circles to their respective mats, I glued them & my greeting to my background. Finally, I adhered my background to a white A2 card base. I really love how this card turned out. Now go create your own holiday card & enter the challenge! :)

Merry Christmas

This past weekend, I participated in the online Card Makers Success Summit. The theme was "Christmas in July," so the focus was on holiday cards. Twenty-five instructors came "together"--virtually, of course--to teach many techniques over the 4-day summit. Preeti Chandran's lesson on easy faux watercolor techniques inspired this card. I used another "trick" I learned during the summit with this card - cut a 9x12" piece of watercolor paper into (6) 3x6" pieces, to make 6 mini slimline cards. With the help of my MISTI stamp positioning tool, I was able to make 6 cards total of this design in just a few hours.

I used Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps' "Christmas Pine" stamp set for the images & greeting. I began by stamping the branches. With the stamp & my Canson Montval watercolor paper panel in my MISTI, I used a green Tombow marker to "ink" up the stamp. I spritzed it a couple of times lightly with water, then stamped onto my paper. I let the stamp sit for a few seconds, to give the ink a chance to absorb into the paper, giving a "faux" watercolor look. I left the stamp in place after opening my MISTI, dried it off, & inked here & there with a darker green color. I spritzed & stamped that, to create some color variation. I repeated this for each branch. If the image stamped too "cleanly" - with too much detail - I just used a damp paintbrush to spread the color out a bit.

For the pinecones, I used a similar technique. I put my panel in the MISTI, positioned my stamp, & inked it up with a light brown marker. I spritzed the stamp lightly, & stamped onto my paper. This time, though, I used a damp paintbrush to spread the ink out on the paper, keeping the shape of the pinecone. I also left a few highlights here & there. I let that dry while I stamped my other 5 panels with the same images. By the time I returned to my first panel, the ink had dried, so I tapped on the same stamp with a darker brown marker. After spritzing, I stamped the image over the original, to provide some detail to the pinecones.

Once my images were all done, I stamped the greeting in Gina K. Designs Charcoal Brown ink. Once I finished, I felt the images & greeting were still a bit too disconnected, though. So I used a pale gold metallic watercolor to splatter over the panel. That seemed to provide the perfect touch. Finally, I matted the panel with brown cardstock, & adhered it to a white card base.

Merry Christmas Poinsettia

The current Christmas Card Throwdown challenge is to use the colors white, deep purple, & gold. I created this card using a background technique taught by Tiffany Solorio during the online Cardmaker Success Summit event.

I cut a piece of Strathmore Mixed Media paper to letter size, & used Dusty Concord, Seedless Preserves, Blueprint Sketch, & Wilted Violet Distress inks with the ink smooshing technique. I smooshed the inks onto my non-stick craft mat, spritzed with water, & pressed my paper into the color. I dried this with my heat tool, & repeated until I'd built up the depth of color I wanted. I also used Crushed Grape & After Midnight Dylusions sprays to add a little more intense color. I spritzed the panel with water droplets, and dried that with my heat tool again for some lighter spots. Finally, I splattered gold metallic watercolors all over the background. Once everything had dried, I cut the sheet into four A2-size panels. I cut 1/8" off 2 sides of the one that I chose for this card, so I would end up with a 1/16" border on all sides when I adhered it to my card base.

I die cut the flower & leaf pieces with the "Blooming Poinsettia" die set from Poppystamps, all from white cardstock. I splattered them with a pale gold metallic watercolor, just for a bit of added interest. I glued the flower pieces together, adding glue just in the middle of each layer, so the petals could fluff up a bit. For the flower center, I used 3 dots I'd made previously with Pale Gold Nuvo Crystal Drops, adding them with glue. I glued the center of the flower to the card panel, & added the leaves underneath, applying glue only to the ends that tucked under the flower.

For the greeting, I die cut Simon Says Stamp's "Merry Christmas" from gold metallic cardstock that I'd backed with Stick It adhesive. To keep the die cut from getting distorted while I applied it to my panel, I left it in the die. I removed the adhesive release paper from the back, placed the die on my panel, & used my craft pick to poke through the holes in the die. This stuck the words on my panel just enough so they stayed put, while still allowing me to adjust them a bit if I needed to. After I removed the die, I used my Teflon bone folder to burnish the greeting in place. Finally, I adhered my card front to a white card base.

Best Wishes

The oldest daughter of a friend I went to school with just got married. I made this card for her & her new husband. The design came from Sketch Challenge #512 at Try Stampin' on Tuesday's challenge blog, but I missed the deadline to enter their challenge. The overall look was inspired by this card I saw on Pinterest, & the embossed frame on this card by Libby Fens. Challenge #87 at Double Trouble Paper Crafting, which had partnered with the sketch challenge, inspired the design as well. The theme there is "It's Hip to be a Square," so to use square(s) and/or circle(s) on your project. I used one of the "Decorative Labels One" dies from Spellbinders (discontinued) for my square, & a circle die cut over that. I also did both heat & dry embossing, to fulfill the second part of their challenge.

I made my card 5x6-1/2", to accommodate both the greeting, from My Favorite Things' "Cause for Celebration" die set (discontinued), & the embossed "Decorative Labels One" die turned 45 degrees. I cut my card front from navy cardstock to that size, & embossed the die frame into it. I die cut a circle from Strathmore Mixed Media paper, & inked it with Antique Linen Distress ink, to give just a bit of color. For shimmer (because we all know the moon shimmers), I pressed my Versamark ink pad all over the circle, and then heat embossed with Ranger Holographic embossing powder.

I punched the owls from black cardstock with the Stampin' Up "Owl Builder" punch (discontinued). I also die cut the branch from Spellbinders' "Sweet Birds on a Branch" set from black. I glued them to the moon, & added a silver glitter heart that I'd punched. I trimmed off the branch where it overhung the moon edge, and adhered it centered over the embossed frame on the card front.

I die cut the greeting from a cream piece of The Paper Studio's Pearlized cardstock. I felt the color complemented the moon nicely. I glued that to my card front, & finally adhered the card front to a white card base.

Big Birthday Present

The current challenge at Send a Smile 4 Kids challenge blog is "Tween/Teen Cards." I created this card with an old digital image from Kenny K, "Present Surprise" (discontinued). The design inspiration came from Sketch #SC746 at Splitcoaststampers.com.

I sized the image in Photoshop, and printed it on a panel of Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper. I used Prismacolor pencils to color it. For a little detail above the image, I used My Favorite Things' "Wonky Dots" stencil & Kitsch Flamingo Distress ink. The stenciling echoes the pink dots on the present.

The rainbow greeting banner was actually a scrap left over from another card I'd made. I heat embossed "happy birthday," using stamps from Altenew's "Birthday Builder" set & Ranger Navy embossing powder. I cut the end of the strip at an angle for a bit more fun, & adhered it to my panel. I glued on 3 buttons from my stash in coordinating colors. After the glue dried, I stitched through the holes with white crochet twine. Finally, I added my panel to a teal cardstock mat that I'd adhered to a white A2-size card base.

Leave a Little Sparkle

Jennifer McGuire recently had a video about the Sparkled Glass technique. I created this card based on that technique, & the butterflies & color palette in the inspiration photo from the If You Give a Crafter a Cookie challenge.

I cut a piece of Grafix DuraLar acetate to 4-1/4x5-1/2". Using my MISTI stamp positioning tool, I centered the image from WPlus9's new "Vintage Ephemera" stamp set on the panel, & stamped it with StazOn Jet Black ink. I then used Sharpie markers to color it, adding the color on the back of the acetate so as not to smear the StazOn.

I cut a panel of patterned paper from the My Mind's Eye "Adorbs" 6x6" pad to 4x5-1/4". I used the coordinating "Vintage Ephemera" die to die cut from the center of that panel. I applied double-sided adhesive to the back of the paper, and adhered it to my acetate, centering the image in the die cut window. Then I trimmed off any acetate that extended beyond the patterned paper.

I adhered a panel of white glitter paper behind the image. I couldn't capture the shimmer in the photo, as it is subtle, but it's there. I matted my panel with pink cardstock & adhered it to a white A2-size card base. I used a sticker from the Tim Holtz "Small Talk" sticker book for my greeting. I felt the wording went perfectly with a sparkly image. Finally, to echo the black of the greeting, I added 3 black sequins to the lower right corner. I think when I do this technique again, I will use a chunkier glitter paper, just so the sparkle shows better. But I still like how this card came out.

Happy Birthday

My aunt's birthday is coming up, so I decided to make her a card. Because she lives in Florida, I wanted to use Hero Arts' "Color Layering Hibiscus" stamp set & coordinating dies (discontinued). To get inspiration, I did a search for that set on Pinterest, & found this card by Yana Smakula. I liked the frame idea, so decided to use that & build my card around it.

I first stamped out my flowers & leaves. I used photos of hibiscus flowers to guide my color choices. For the second layer of the pink hibiscus, I used the same pink ink I had for the first layer, just stamping it multiple times to build up the color. For the stamen, I used gold embossing powder on the orange hibiscus, & yellow on the pink ones, just for a little something different. However, I apparently didn't stamp the flowers exactly "right," & the dies wouldn't line up properly. So I fussy cut those. Thankfully, I was able to die cut the leaves. Lesson learned - die cut the flowers first and then stamp!

I cut my white frame first, since I knew it would be the larger element. I used a paper trimmer to cut the main piece, then used a Waffle Flower "Nesting Squares" die to cut out the opening. I then cut another frame piece from black cardstock. Before I cut the inside window, I marked where I wanted the happy to die cut. I used the happy die from Spellbinders' "Happy Birthday Banner" die (discontinued) & partial die cutting to cut the word from where the window would go. Then I used a craft knife & ruler to cut the remainder of the window. The "Happy Birthday Banner" cuts the word both right side up & upside down (connected to each other), so you can fold it over a string to make a banner. So once I'd cut away the excess of the window, I folded the upper part of the letters over, & glued them to the back of the lower part, to provide a little more reinforcement. I stamped the birthday, from Altenew's "Birthday Builder" set, on the white frame, & adhered the black frame behind the white.

For some added interest in the background, I embossed a white panel with the "Lumber" 3-D embossing folder by Tim Holtz for Sizzix. I matted that with black, adhered it to a white A2 card base, and arranged my flowers, leaves, & frame. I glued everything down flat, except for the flower in the upper right corner, which I popped up with foam tape.

Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Friend

A good friend of ours has a birthday this weekend. She always appreciates my cards, so I tend to make them really special. The "Beautiful Pop-up Book Card" tutorial by Sam Calcott at Mixed Up Craft inspired this card.

I first created a 5x7" card base from heavyweight white cardstock. I cut a piece of script patterned paper to 4-1/2x6-1/2", and matted it with pink, leaving a 1/8" border, then adhered it to the card base. I used Altenew's "Vintage Roses" stamp set & coordinating dies for the flowers and leaves. Our friend lives in Tyler, TX, which is designated the Rose Capital of America, so that guided my choice of flowers.

I created the greeting for the front in Photoshop, & printed it onto parchment paper. I die cut that with a Spellbinders "Decorative Labels One" die (discontinued). It kind of got lost on the script paper, since there is not much color difference, so I die cut a mat from pink with a Spellbinders "Labels One" die (discontinued), that coordinates with the decorative label. I adhered those together, and mounted them to my card front. Finally, I glued the roses & leaves in place around the greeting.

Inside of card

The recipient is a church choir director, so I decided to make this "book" card a music book. I found royalty-free sheet music online, and downloaded it. I printed out the first 6 pages, and scanned them into my computer. I opened each page in Photoshop, & sized them so they would fit on the book pages, following the measurements in the tutorial. I then printed them onto parchment paper, & cut them to size.

I matted each music page with pink, & adhered them to the inside pages that I'd cut from white cardstock. I also added the end papers to the inside covers of the card. I created the mechanism as per the tutorial, and inserted my pages.

I die cut the "happy birthday" from black glitter paper, using the "Celebration Words: Script" die set from Sizzix by Tim Holtz. I added that to another "Decorative Labels One" die cut, that I'd cut from a double layer of Essentials by Ellen 40 lb. vellum. (The vellum helps mute the background sheet music, to make the greeting more legible, without totally obscuring the notes.) To finish, I added a couple more roses & leaves in opposite corners of the greeting. I made a matching envelope as well. Since there is a bit of bulk to this card, I couldn't really use a "flat" envelope, so I made one that's a bit more like an envelope-shaped box.

Happy Birthday!

A woman I met at an online retreat last Fall has a birthday coming up, so I made her this card. I used several Lawn Fawn products to create my elements.

I stamped the mice, from "Bubbles of Joy," as well as one of the party hats from "Beam Me Up," on scraps of Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. (This is my preferred ink & paper combination when I use colored pencils.) I used my Prismacolor pencils to color them, then die cut them with the coordinating dies. I used a bit of liquid glue to add a hat to each mouse's head, & went over their eyes with a black glaze pen.

I used My Favorite Things' "Rolling Clouds" stencil & Tumbled Glass Distress ink to create the sky. I cut the grass with a couple of "Grassy Hillside Borders" dies from a scrap of Recollections "Watercolor" 12x12" patterned paper. I used another purple scrap from the same paper pad for my balloon, which I die cut with a "Party Balloons" die. I also die cut 3 more balloons from scrap white cardstock & glued them to the back of my purple balloon to create dimension. I heat embossed the greeting, from "Beam Me Up," on the balloon and used a white gel pen to add the exclamation point.

After I adhered the back grass layer to my card front, I glued down the running mouse. I tied a piece of white crochet twine around the neck of the balloon, & glued the balloon to my card. I stretched the twine to the mouse's paw, and used a drop of liquid glue to hold it in place. (I clamped the twine with my cross-lock tweezers while the glue dried, to keep it fairly taut.) I added the second mouse to the balloon with liquid glue. I used scraps of cardstock behind his upper part where he hung over the top of the balloon, to keep him level with the balloon. Finally, I adhered the front grass piece with foam tape.

To add a little something to the inside of the card, I die cut another grassy layer, and adhered that in place. I used a third mouse from "Bubbles of Joy," with his little party hat, and added the cupcake from Lawn Fawn's "Party Unicorn" stamp & die set. I positioned the mouse so he is looking up where the inside message will go. I really love how this card came out!

Floral Happy Mother's Day

I created this card for my brother & sister-in-law to give our mom for Mother's Day. I used Sketch #SC741 at Splitcoaststampers.com for my design.

After I sized it in Photoshop to fit the sketch dimensions, I printed the "Coneflowers and Butterfly" digital stamp from Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps onto a piece of 140 lb. watercolor paper. I used my watercolors to paint it, following a reference photo for the flowers I found online. I also printed the greeting, from Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps' "Mother's Day Sentiments" digital stamp set, onto a strip of white cardstock, & rounded the corners with my 1/8" We R Memory Keepers Corner Chomper.

I die cut the image panel with a "Nesting Oval Infinity" die from Hero Arts. I adhered it & the greeting to a panel of blue patterned paper from Die Cuts with a View's "The Citrus Matstack." I added that to an orange panel from the same paper pad, & adhered a strip of an orange dot paper along the right side. That finished this super-easy-to-put-together card. And yes, our mom loved it!

Punny Mother's Day Card

I have always loved a good pun, & when I saw this card on Pinterest, I thought, I've got to make one myself. I used the "Color Layering Orchid in a Pot" stamps & coordinating dies from Hero Arts (discontinued) for my flower. Because of the relatively large sizes of the various elements, I made my card about 4-1/4x7-1/4"

I found some reference photos for orchids online, & one that had yellow & magenta petals with white centers intrigued me. I began by die cutting the main orchid image, so I could get the flowers & stems placed correctly. I stamped the first flower layer in Hero Arts Lemon Yellow. I used Hero Arts Raspberry Jam for the magenta, & heat embossed the centers with Ranger White Super Fine Detail powder. I stamped the stems with Lawn Fawn's Doe ink; & used Hero Arts Lime Green, Lawn Fawn Freshly Cut Grass, & Hero Arts Pine inks for the leaves. I stamped the dirt with Memento Espresso Truffle ink, & finally the pot with Lawn Fawn Moonstone. I then die cut the pot, leaves, & dirt with the coordinating dies. I used a small strip of lightweight cardstock as a backing piece to glue the pot, dirt, & leaves together, to make them easier to handle & position.

I die cut the letters for "Y'Orchid" with Lawn Fawn's "Quinn's Capital ABCs," pulling in the apostrophe from "Quinn's 123s." Then I stamped them with the coordinating stamps & Raspberry Jam ink. I stamped the first part of the greeting using Papertrey Ink's "Polka Dot Parade" alphabet stamps (discontinued). Initially, I was going to use those for the "Happy Mother's Day" at the bottom as well, but they were too large, so I opted for Lawn Fawn's "Claire's ABCs" instead.

After I stamped the top & bottom portions of the greeting, I glued down the die cut & stamped letters. Finally, I glued on the orchid, letting the very top overlap the "Y'Orchid" word slightly. My mom really got a kick out of this!

Hoppy Birthday!

The current challenge at Double Trouble is "Fun Fold." They are partnering with Crafting Happiness for their Challenge #95, "Frogs (or Anything Goes)." I am entering this card in both challenges.

I followed a tutorial for a Flap Fold card at Splitcoaststampers.com. I used Bazzill Marine Mist cardstock for the card base, & patterned paper from Echo Park's "It's a Celebration" 6x6" pad to decorate. I punched along the upper short panel with the "Scallop Sentiment" border punch from Fiskars.

I stamped the frog (from Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps' "Birthday Pals" set) onto a scrap of Strathmore Smooth Bristol paper with Versafine Onyx Black ink. I colored it with my Tombow markers. I die cut the frog with a We R Memory Keepers "Nesting Circles" die, & cut a mat from pink Core'dinations cardstock with a Waffle Flower "Additional Circles" die, to give me a 1/16" border. I also stamped the present on a 1" circle I'd punched from bristol paper, and colored it with my markers. I die cut a 1-1/8" pink cardstock circle for the mat.

I use a 1-1/2" circle die to cut the hole in my card base. After I adhered the patterned paper on the front lower flap, I glued my matted focal circle within the opening, adding the glue only to the bottom area of the circle. I adhered the present circle with foam tape over the edge of the top flap, as a closure for the flap. Finally, I stamped the greeting on the upper flap.

Inside of card

For the inside of the card, I cut a 4" square of cream cardstock, & added a 1" tall border of patterned paper to the bottom edge. I masked off the border strip with a piece of Post It tape, & stamped the balloon & inside sentiment. I stamped the balloon again onto bristol paper, colored it, & fussy cut it out. To finish, I glued the colored balloon over the stamped on on the inside of the card.

Happy Mother's Day

Handmade Happy Mother's Day card with a colored image of a boy holding a giant purple flower

Double Trouble's Challenge #80 theme is "Something, Anything, Everything," with an optional challenge twist of coloring. I made this Mother's Day card to send to Send a Smile 4 Kids, inspired by that challenge. The design for my card is based on Sketch #SC843 from Splitcoaststampers.com.

I got the "Flower Boy" digital image from Just ME Digital Stamps. (Sadly, they are no longer in business.) I thought it would be perfect for a Mother's Day card from a little boy.

I did the image/greeting panel in Photoshop. I created a blank "canvas" to the size I needed, & copied the image onto that. Then I resized the image to fit. For the greeting, I used a font on my computer. I typed each word on a separate layer, and moved them into place, so they snugged together in the space under the flower. Finally, I printed the image/greeting onto a piece of Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper that I'd cut to size.

I used my Prismacolor colored pencils to color the boy & flower. I went for a complementary color scheme with his orange shirt & blue jeans. I have been into purple & green for a few years now, and so I colored the flower in those colors. I made the flower center yellow, which is the complement of purple, to keep with a complementary color scheme idea.

I matted a piece of patterned paper from Echo Park's "Fine and Dandy" 6x6" paper pad with dark blue cardstock, playing off the boy's jeans color. I matted 3 sides of the image/greeting panel with grey cardstock, added a green cardstock strip to my background, & adhered the main panel in place. Finally, I mounted my card front on a white A2-sized card base.
